Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
8.CE.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 8.CE.1.a
Estimate and solve contextual problems that require the computation of one discount or markup and the resulting sale price.
- 8.CE.1.b
Estimate and solve contextual problems that require the computation of the sales tax, tip and resulting total.
- 8.CE.1.c
Estimate and solve contextual problems that require the computation of the percent increase or decrease.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate and calculate discounts, markups, sales tax, tips, and final prices in everyday situations. They also find percent increase or decrease by comparing the change with the original amount.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct original amount, convert the percent, and decide whether to add or subtract. They calculate each amount accurately and use an estimate to judge whether the result makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat 20% as 20 instead of 0.20, or report the discount amount as the sale price. They may divide by the new amount instead of the original amount when finding percent change. Some subtract tax or tip rather than add it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A $72 meal has a 15% tip. Estimate, then find the tip and total. A price falls from $72 to $63. Find the percent decrease.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs price tags, discount cards, and calculators to estimate and calculate each discount, sale price, tax, and final cost.
Ask students to explain why a 25% markup followed by a 25% discount does not return an item to its original price.
Run a receipt relay where teams solve cards for discount, markup, tax, tip, or percent change and check each answer by estimation.
Use a local restaurant menu to plan a meal, estimate a tip, calculate the exact tip, and find the final bill.
