What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate and calculate one discount or markup based on an original price. They then subtract or add that amount to find the resulting price in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the original price as the base and convert the percent correctly. They calculate the discount or markup, adjust the original price in the correct direction, and check against an estimate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply by the percent but report that amount as the final price. They may add a discount or subtract a markup, or use the changed price as the base instead of the original price.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A $72 jacket is discounted 25%. Estimate the sale price, then find the exact discount and sale price.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs price tags and coupon cards, then have them estimate and calculate each discount or markup and final price.
Ask students to explain why a 30% discount on $80 does not make the sale price $24.
Play a matching game with cards showing original prices, percentages, adjustment amounts, and final prices.
Use store ads to compare one-discount offers, then calculate which item has the lowest sale price.
