What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate and calculate sales tax and tips by multiplying a subtotal by a percent. They add the charges to the subtotal and judge whether the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the correct subtotal and write each percent as a decimal. They estimate first, calculate the tax or tip accurately, and check that the final total is reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply by 6 instead of 0.06, or add the percent number directly to the subtotal. They may calculate the tip from the after-tax total or forget to add both charges to the subtotal.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A meal costs $42.50, with 6% sales tax and an 18% tip on the meal price. Estimate, then find each charge and the exact total.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs menus, calculators, and blank receipt forms to choose meals, estimate charges, then calculate tax, tip, and final totals.
Ask students to explain whether $50 covers a $39.80 meal with 6% tax and a 20% tip.
Play a matching game where students pair subtotal and rate cards with the correct estimated and exact total cards.
Use an anonymized store or restaurant receipt to check how the tax, tip, and final total were calculated.
