Virginia SOL 6.CE.2.d
The Standard
Estimate, determine, and justify the solution to one and two-step contextual problems, involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with integers.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, demonstrate, solve, and justify solutions to problems using operations with integers, including those in context.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students translate situations such as debts, temperatures, and elevation changes into integer calculations. They estimate first, solve one or two steps, and explain why the sign and size of the answer make sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects the correct operations and keeps each value’s sign connected to the situation. The student gives a reasonable estimate, calculates accurately, and explains the result with an equation and context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every negative sign as subtraction or apply multiplication sign rules to addition. They may reverse the order in subtraction, miss a second step, or give an answer whose sign does not fit the context.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A bank account has a balance of -$18. A $25 deposit is made, then $12 is spent. Estimate and find the final balance. Explain why your answer is reasonable.”

Ways to Teach It
Use red and yellow integer chips to model a bank balance changing through two transactions, then record the matching equation.
Ask students to explain why subtracting a negative temperature change raises the result, using words, a number line, and an equation.
Play Integer Scenario Match: teams pair context cards, equations, estimates, and exact answers, then defend one match.
Track morning and afternoon temperatures for a week, then calculate and explain each day’s net change.
