Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify the quantities, signs, and operations needed in a multistep situation. They estimate first, calculate with different rational number forms, and explain why the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student writes an expression that matches each step, makes a sensible estimate, and calculates the exact answer accurately. The student includes units and explains how the estimate supports the answer's sign and size.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat every negative sign as a command to subtract, or lose the sign when multiplying and dividing. They may misalign decimals, add unlike denominators, or invert the wrong number when dividing fractions. Some skip the estimate or omit units and context from their explanation.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: At 6 a.m., the temperature is -3.75°C. It rises 5 1/2°C, then drops 2.125°C. Estimate and find the final temperature, then explain why your answer is reasonable.

Lesson moves

Place transaction cards on a floor number line, then have students model deposits, withdrawals, and fees before calculating the final balance.
