Virginia SOL 7.CE.2.a
The Standard
Given a proportional relationship between two quantities, create and use a ratio table to determine missing values.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will solve problems, including those in context, involving proportional relationships.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize matching amounts in rows or columns and find equivalent pairs. They multiply or divide both quantities by the same factor, including using a unit rate when helpful.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students keep the two quantities in the correct rows or columns. They find missing entries by scaling both quantities equally or by finding a value for one unit, and they check that all pairs have the same ratio.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add the same amount to both rows instead of multiplying both quantities by the same factor. They may also switch the quantities, scale only one row, or use an incorrect unit rate.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: A cyclist travels 18 miles in 2 hours. Complete a ratio table for 1, 3, and 5 hours, and label your scale factors.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters to model 3 red tiles for every 5 blue tiles, then record four equivalent pairs in a ratio table.
Ask students to explain in writing why adding 2 to both quantities usually does not create an equivalent ratio.
Play ratio table relay, where teams draw a card, complete one missing entry, and pass the table to the next player.
Use a recipe with 2 cups of rice for 5 servings, then build a table for 10, 15, and 25 servings.
