Virginia SOL 6.PFA.2.b
The Standard
Determine a missing value in a ratio table that represents a proportional relationship between two quantities using a unit rate.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify and represent proportional relationships between two quantities, including those in context (unit rates are limited to positive values).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the amount for one unit from a complete pair in a ratio table. They use that unit rate to multiply or divide and find the missing value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can find the unit rate from a complete pair in the table and use it to calculate the blank. They can show the multiplication or division used and explain why the ratio stays constant.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add the same amount across columns instead of multiplying by a scale factor. They may divide in the wrong order when finding the unit rate or use different rates for different columns.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A car travels 54 miles on 2 gallons of gas. At the same rate, how far will it travel on 5 gallons? Show the unit rate and equation.

Ways to Teach It
Use linking cubes to build equal groups, record each group in a ratio table, and find a covered value using the unit rate.
Ask students to explain why adding the same number to both quantities does not preserve a proportional relationship.
Give pairs ratio-table cards and unit-rate cards, then have them match each table, solve its blank, and check with a partner.
Compare the cost of several identical notebooks, find the price per notebook, and predict the cost of a different quantity.
