Virginia SOL 6.PFA.2.d
The Standard
When given a contextual situation representing a proportional relationship, find the unit rate and create a table of values or a graph.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will identify and represent proportional relationships between two quantities, including those in context (unit rates are limited to positive values).

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read a situation and determine how much of one quantity matches one unit of another. They use that rate to build ordered pairs and display them in a table or graph.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly find the amount for one unit and label it with units. They generate equivalent pairs and place them accurately in a table or on a straight graph through the origin.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide in the wrong order and attach the wrong units to the rate. They may add equal amounts instead of multiplying, or graph points without including the origin.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A printer produces 24 pages in 3 minutes. Find pages per minute, then show four matching pairs in a table or graph.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs measuring cups and water, then have them record cup and volume pairs for repeated equal pours.
Ask students to explain in writing how the rate appears in a table and on a graph.
Play Rate Match with cards showing situations, unit rates, tables, and graphs for students to sort into matching sets.
Compare grocery prices by calculating cost per item, then represent each price pattern in a table or graph.
