What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify two equivalent ratios and place matching quantities in the same positions. They use multiplication or division to find an unknown and check that both ratios have the same unit rate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can turn a table, diagram, or word problem into a proportion with correctly aligned units. They solve accurately, label the answer, and explain why it is reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse one ratio, so the quantities and units no longer match. Some use cross products correctly but make an arithmetic error when isolating the unknown. Others add the same amount to both quantities instead of using a constant scale factor.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Five notebooks cost $7.50. Write and solve a proportion to find the cost of eight notebooks, then show one check.

Ways to Teach It
Use measuring cups and colored water to make a 2:3 mixture, then write and solve a proportion for a larger batch.
Have students explain why matching units must occupy the same positions in both ratios, using a labeled example.
Play Proportion Match: students pair context cards, proportion cards, and solution cards, then justify each match to a partner.
Use grocery ads to find the cost of a different quantity, writing and solving a proportion before checking the unit price.
