What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice unfamiliar words while listening to stories and informational read-alouds. They ask about meanings, use pictures or simple dictionaries, and try new words in conversation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks about an unknown word and uses story details, pictures, or a simple dictionary to learn its meaning. The student then uses the word correctly during discussion or play.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess a word only from its first sound or assume the picture gives the full meaning. They may repeat a new word correctly but use it in the wrong situation. They may also think dictionaries are only for reading definitions.
How to Assess It
- After a short read-aloud, ask, “What does enormous mean? What helped you figure it out? Use enormous in your own sentence.”

Ways to Teach It
Place labeled objects in mystery bags, then have students feel, reveal, describe, and sort them using new words such as smooth and rough.
After a read-aloud, ask, “Which new word would help you describe our classroom?” Students draw the word and dictate a sentence.
Play Vocabulary Charades with word cards from recent science, math, and story lessons while classmates name and explain each acted word.
Take a school walk and photograph examples of words such as narrow, crowded, sturdy, and enormous, then make a class picture dictionary.
