What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students talk about word meanings from read-alouds, class subjects, and everyday experiences. They ask when a word is unclear and use pictures or dictionaries for help. They practice new words in discussions and speaking tasks.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students notice unfamiliar words and ask what they mean. They use pictures, simple dictionaries, and context to explain words. They use newly learned words correctly when speaking about stories, science, math, or daily experiences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think they should pretend to know an unfamiliar word instead of asking about it. They may name a picture without using it to infer meaning. They may repeat a new word but use it in the wrong situation.
How to Assess It
- Read a short passage containing one unfamiliar word and show a related picture. Ask, “What might this word mean, and what helped you?”

Ways to Teach It
Place labeled objects in a mystery bag, then have students feel, reveal, and describe each object using a newly taught word.
After a read-aloud, ask, “Which new word would help you describe a character, and why?”
Play Word Detective by showing a picture and sentence, then letting pairs choose the best meaning from two options.
Study a classroom weather chart, then practice using forecast, temperature, cloudy, and sunny during a pretend weather report.
