Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students learn the meanings of unfamiliar words from read-alouds and class lessons. They use those words correctly when answering questions, retelling events, and talking with classmates.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student chooses a recently taught word that fits an idea and uses it in a clear sentence. The student can explain or act out the meaning and use the word in a new situation.
Common Misconceptions: Children may repeat a word without knowing what it means or choose it because it sounds familiar. They may use it only in the sentence first modeled or avoid it when speaking.
How to Assess It: Display three recently taught words and say, “Choose one word and tell your partner something about an animal.” Listen for a sentence that shows the word’s meaning.

Lesson moves

Place picture cards and matching word cards in a basket, then have children pair them and describe each picture using the word.
Ask partners, “Which new word describes our story character best, and why?” Provide the frame, “The character is ___ because ___.”
Play New Word Charades, where children act out a taught word and classmates guess it, then use it in a sentence.
Take a classroom walk and ask children to describe objects or actions using recently learned words such as enormous, smooth, crowded, or glide.
