What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use recently taught words and phrases when they talk with classmates and the teacher. They choose words that fit the topic and use them in complete, meaningful sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain a new word, then use it correctly during partner talk or a class discussion. The student can revise the sentence if the word does not fit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy a memorized sentence but not use the word in a new context. They may confuse related words, use a phrase literally, or force a new word into an unrelated comment.
How to Assess It
- Give students three recently taught words. Ask, "Choose one word and use it in a sentence to tell your partner about today’s read-aloud."

Ways to Teach It
Place picture and word cards at stations; pairs match them, then say a sentence using each matched word.
After a read-aloud, ask, "Which new word best describes the character’s problem, and why?" Require the word in each response.
Play Vocabulary Toss: a student catches a beanbag, draws a word card, and uses the word in a sentence before tossing again.
Set up a class store where students use assigned words such as price, choose, compare, and purchase while role-playing shoppers.
