What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose recent vocabulary that fits what they want to say. They pronounce each word clearly and use it in a spoken sentence that shows its meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use several recent vocabulary words correctly during partner and class conversations. Their spoken sentences make each word’s meaning clear and fit the topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a word without showing they understand it. They may also use the wrong word form, mispronounce the word, or force it into an unrelated sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give each student one vocabulary card and ask, “What happened in the story?” Listen for a complete response that uses the word accurately.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards and picture cards; students match them, then explain each match aloud using the target word.
Ask, “Which character was most reluctant to act, and why?” and require partners to use reluctant in their responses.
Play Vocabulary Toss: a student catches a beanbag, draws a word card, and uses the word to answer a class question.
Have students give a short weather report using three class words, such as forecast, chilly, and visibility.
