What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students bring recently taught words into partner talks, group discussions, and short presentations. They select words that fit their meaning and use the correct form.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a recently taught word that fits the topic and use it accurately while speaking. They can explain what the word means if a classmate asks.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a word without understanding its meaning or use the wrong word form. They may also force vocabulary into a sentence where it sounds unnatural.
How to Assess It
- Give students three recent vocabulary words and ask them to explain a weekend plan to a partner using two words correctly. Listen for meaning, context, and correct word form.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards and classroom objects, then have them describe or compare the objects using each word naturally.
Ask, “Which character made the wisest choice?” and require each student to answer using two recent vocabulary words.
Play Vocabulary Hot Seat, where teammates give spoken clues and the seated player guesses the word, then uses it in context.
Have students role-play ordering at a restaurant, reporting weather, or giving directions while using four words from the current unit.
