What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work recently learned words and phrases into answers, explanations, and partner talk. They choose words that fit the meaning, context, and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use recent vocabulary accurately and naturally when answering questions, explaining ideas, or talking with classmates. They can adjust a word's form to fit the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a word without understanding its meaning or use it in the wrong context. They may also avoid unfamiliar words and rely on simpler, familiar terms.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two recent vocabulary words. Ask them to explain a class topic to a partner using both words accurately.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards and picture cards, then have them match each pair and explain the connection aloud using the target word.
Ask, “Which new word best describes the character’s choice, and why?” Require students to use the word in their response.
Play Vocabulary Taboo, where students describe a target word without saying it while classmates guess and use it in a sentence.
Have students give a one-minute weather report, sports update, or school announcement using three recently learned words.
