What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recall recently taught words and choose ones that fit what they want to say. They use those words in complete spoken sentences with partners or groups.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses a taught word that fits the topic and uses it in a clear sentence. The student can respond to a classmate with the word and explain it when asked.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a word without showing what it means. They may use the right word in the wrong place or avoid it because pronunciation feels hard.
How to Assess It
- Give each student one target word and ask, “Tell me something about recess using this word.” Listen for accurate meaning and a complete sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards and word cards to match, then have students tell a partner a sentence using each matched word.
Ask, “Which word best describes our classroom today, and why?” Students answer with one target word and a complete sentence.
Play Vocabulary Toss: toss a beanbag, name a target word, and have the catcher use it in a sentence.
During a weather check, students choose a target word such as chilly, cloudy, or bright and report conditions to the class.
