What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use words learned in math, science, social studies, and other lessons when they speak, draw, or write. They choose words that clearly name or describe an idea.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use learned words such as "pattern," "equal," "habitat," or "community" in relevant sentences. They can connect each word to a picture, object, or idea from a lesson.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat a new word without knowing what it means. They may use a familiar word, such as "thing," instead of a precise word like "triangle" or "habitat."

How to Assess It

Show a picture connected to a recent science, math, or social studies lesson. Ask each student to describe it using one content word and explain that word.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs classroom objects to sort, then have them describe each group using words such as shape, size, equal, or texture.

  2. Show a lesson picture and ask, "Which science, math, or social studies word helps us explain what we see?"

  3. Play Vocabulary Charades with learned content words, letting students act out or point to clues while classmates name the word.

  4. Take a school walk and have students name examples of patterns, shapes, plants, signs, and community helpers they notice.
