What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn words from math, science, social studies, and reading. They use accurate subject words when speaking and writing about what they have learned.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately use recently taught terms during class discussions and in written responses. They can explain each word with an example that fits the subject.

Common Misconceptions

Students may memorize a definition but use the word incorrectly in a sentence. They may also confuse everyday meanings with subject meanings, such as using difference only to mean a disagreement.

How to Assess It

Give students four recent words, two from math and two from science. Ask them to choose one from each subject, explain it, and use it in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort word and picture cards under math, science, social studies, and reading headings, then explain one match.

  2. Ask students to write three sentences explaining a class topic with at least two recently taught subject words.

  3. Play vocabulary bingo using definitions, examples, or pictures as clues for words from recent units.

  4. Read a weather forecast and circle science words, then discuss how each word helps readers understand the forecast.
