What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use new words from math, science, social studies, and other lessons when speaking and writing. They choose words that match the topic and meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly use taught words such as equal, habitat, and community during speaking and writing. Their sentences show they understand each word in its subject area.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat a word without understanding it. They may also use a familiar meaning when a word has a different meaning in math, science, or social studies.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket with three recently taught words. Students choose one and write or dictate a sentence that shows its meaning in the correct subject.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort picture and word cards into math, science, and social studies groups, then explain one choice aloud.

  2. Ask, “Which new word helped you explain today’s lesson?” and have students use it in a complete sentence.

  3. Play vocabulary charades with cards such as measure, observe, add, and vote while classmates name the word and subject.

  4. Take a school walk and have students describe what they see using words from recent science, math, or social studies lessons.
