What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine unfamiliar word meanings using context, word parts, synonyms, antonyms, and reference tools. They compare shades of meaning and use newly learned words in speech and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer a word’s meaning and explain which context clue, root, affix, or word relationship helped. They select precise verbs and adjectives, check references, and use new words correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a meaning based on one familiar word part while ignoring the sentence. They may treat synonyms as exact matches or confuse homophones with words that share meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia reluctantly stepped onto the shaky bridge.” Define “reluctantly,” underline a context clue, and use the word in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root, prefix, suffix, and ending cards to build words, predict meanings, and confirm them with a dictionary.
Ask students to compare “glanced,” “stared,” and “peered,” then write a sentence showing when each verb fits.
Play a context clue relay where teams solve word cards using sentence clues, morphology, synonyms, antonyms, or homophones.
Have students revise a school lunch announcement with precise adjectives and content words, using a thesaurus to test better choices.
