What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students discuss challenging words and phrases they hear in conversations or encounter in books. They explain meanings using context, examples, and ideas shared by others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain an unfamiliar word or phrase in their own words. They support the meaning with context and use the word or phrase accurately in a new example.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy a dictionary definition that does not fit the passage. They may interpret figurative phrases literally or explain a word without using clues from the conversation or text.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Maya was reluctant to enter the dark cave, so she paused at the opening.” Explain “reluctant,” name one clue, and use it in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word and meaning cards from a read-aloud, then have them match each pair and point to supporting context.
Ask, “Which word or phrase was hardest in today’s reading, and what helped you understand it?”
Play vocabulary charades using words from recent books, with classmates naming the word and explaining its meaning after each turn.
Have students record one unfamiliar word heard outside class, then share where they heard it and what they think it means.
