What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain unfamiliar or precise words and expressions they hear in conversation or meet in books. They use context, examples, and prior knowledge to support their meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain an unfamiliar word or phrase accurately in their own words. They point to clues from the conversation or text and use the expression correctly in a new sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat the sentence instead of explaining the word or phrase. They may choose a meaning that fits one familiar use but not the passage. They may also interpret figurative phrases literally.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Lena was reluctant to speak, so she waited until everyone else had shared. What does reluctant mean, and how do you know?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word and phrase cards from a read-aloud, then have them sort, define, and match each card to a supporting sentence.
After a read-aloud, ask, “Which new expression helped you understand the character, and what do you think it means?”
Play Vocabulary Charades using recently heard words, with classmates naming the word and explaining which actions revealed its meaning.
Have students record one unfamiliar expression heard at school or home, then ask the speaker what it means and report back.
