What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose the homophone that fits the meaning of a sentence. They use nearby words to explain why the other spelling does not fit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly choose among homophones such as to, too, and two when reading a complete sentence. They can point to words that support each choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a word because it sounds right without checking its meaning or spelling. They may treat homophones as interchangeable, especially their, there, and they’re.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “Please put ___ books over ___.” Have them write their and there in the correct blanks, then circle the clue for each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and homophone cards, then have students place the correct card in each blank and circle the clue.
Ask students to write two sentences using pair and pear, then explain how each sentence shows the word’s meaning.
Play Homophone Match-Up by having teams match word cards to sentence cards and earn a point for explaining each choice.
Collect signs, menus, or online posts with homophone errors, then have students correct each word using the surrounding sentence.
