What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose the homophone that fits a sentence's meaning. They use nearby words and details to justify the spelling they selected.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can accurately complete sentences with common homophones, including their, there, they’re, to, too, and two. The student points to a context clue and explains why the other choices do not fit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the spelling they see most often because all options sound alike. They may treat apostrophes as optional or use one clue word without checking the whole sentence's meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “The players put ___ bags over ___ because ___ leaving now.” Choose from their, there, and they’re, then underline one clue for each answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and homophone cards, such as to, too, and two. Students place each card, then underline the deciding clue.
Ask, “How does the meaning change if we replace their with there?” Students discuss, then write two sentences showing the difference.
Play Homophone Relay: teams select the correct word card for each projected sentence and earn a point after naming the context clue.
Use a restaurant menu or store ad. Students find words with homophones and write sentences that make each meaning clear.
