What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use nearby definitions, examples, contrasts, and familiar word parts to work out an unfamiliar word. They test the possible meaning by rereading the sentence or passage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a reasonable meaning for an unfamiliar word and point to clues that support it. They reread with that meaning and revise it if the sentence no longer makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from one nearby word without checking the whole passage. They may confuse a possible meaning with one that fits the sentence. Some rely only on a dictionary or ignore useful prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “After hiking all day, Maya was famished and ate two sandwiches.” Ask students to define “famished,” underline a clue, and explain their reasoning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with a mystery word, then have them highlight clues and write a meaning on a sticky note.
Ask, “Which clue best reveals the word’s meaning, and why?” Students answer using evidence from the sentence.
Play Context Clue Detective with short passages, awarding points for a fitting definition and two supporting clues.
Use an unfamiliar word from a menu, advertisement, or school notice and have students infer its meaning before checking a reference source.
