What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out unfamiliar words by using nearby words, sentences, pictures, and familiar word parts. They test a possible meaning by rereading to see whether it fits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a reasonable meaning for an unfamiliar word and point to the clues that support it. They reread the sentence with their meaning to check that it makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter or choose a familiar meaning that does not fit the sentence. They may also overlook clues in nearby sentences, pictures, or word parts.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “The parched hikers drank three bottles of water. What does parched mean?” Students circle clues and explain their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Place sentence cards and meaning cards around the room, then have pairs match them and highlight the clues that support each match.
Ask students to explain in writing: “Maya was famished, so she ate two sandwiches. What does famished mean, and which words helped?”
Play Context Clue Relay, where teams solve one word card, name the clue, and pass the next card to a teammate.
Give students a restaurant menu or weather report and have them infer one unfamiliar word using pictures, headings, and nearby details.
