What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely to a challenging read-aloud and notice unfamiliar words. They use story events, illustrations, and teacher discussion to figure out meanings and try the words themselves.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain a new word with simple words, a gesture, an example, or a drawing. They use the word correctly when discussing the text or a familiar situation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat a new word without knowing what it means. They may rely only on a picture, ignore clues from the story, or use the word for too many things.

How to Assess It

After reading a story containing the word enormous, ask, "Draw something enormous, then complete: Enormous means ___."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards and classroom objects to sort under two new read-aloud words, such as fragile and sturdy.

  2. Ask, "Which new word describes the character best, and what in the story proves it?" Students draw and dictate an answer.

  3. Play vocabulary charades using cards with target words, then have classmates name the word and explain the clue.

  4. Take a school walk to find examples of target words, then photograph or draw each example and add a spoken label.
