What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice unfamiliar or interesting words while listening to and reading challenging stories and informational texts. They use context, illustrations, word parts, and discussion to build and apply meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain a new word in their own words and identify clues that support the meaning. They use the word accurately when speaking or writing about a different situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from one nearby word instead of using the whole sentence. They may recognize a word during reading but misuse it later or assume it always has one meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya was reluctant to enter the dark room, so she waited outside.” Define “reluctant,” underline a clue, and use it in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
After a read-aloud, students match six new word cards to pictures, examples, and nonexamples placed around the table.
Ask students to discuss, “Which sentence clue best explains this word, and why?” then write a shared definition.
Play vocabulary charades using words from the week’s texts, with classmates naming the word and explaining the evidence.
Students collect unfamiliar words from menus, signs, or announcements, then share each word’s meaning and where they found it.
