What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely to rich read-alouds and notice unfamiliar or interesting words. They use story details, pictures, and discussion to work out meanings and use the words themselves.
What Mastery Looks Like
- After a read-aloud, students can explain several selected words in child-friendly language. They can point to helpful clues and use each word in a sensible sentence or example.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess a word’s meaning from one picture while ignoring what was read. They may repeat a definition without understanding it or use a new word in the wrong situation. Some think they must know every word before they can understand the text.
How to Assess It
- After the read-aloud, give each student one target word and ask, “What does it mean, which text clue helped, and how would you use it?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards and word cards from a read-aloud, then have them match each word to an example and explain their choices.
Ask, “Which word helped you picture the setting, what does it mean, and which part of the story helped you?”
Play vocabulary charades using target words from the read-aloud, with classmates naming the word and explaining how the action fits.
Take a school walk and have students point out real examples of target words such as narrow, crowded, sturdy, or enormous.
