What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine word meanings through context, Greek and Latin word parts, word relationships, and print or digital references. They analyze figurative and connotative meanings. They use new academic and subject-specific words in discussion and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain unfamiliar words using context, word parts, word relationships, and reference tools. They interpret symbols and figurative language, distinguish shades of meaning, and use new vocabulary accurately in speech and writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a familiar meaning without checking how the word functions in the sentence. They may treat synonyms as exact matches, confuse connotation with definition, or interpret figurative language literally.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Her tentative answer was a small bridge toward agreement.” Define tentative from context, explain the metaphor, and use tentative correctly in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root, prefix, and suffix tiles; students build four words, predict meanings, then verify each word in a dictionary.
Ask: How do slim, skinny, and scrawny change a description; students discuss connotations, then write one sentence for each word.
Run context-clue stations where teams infer highlighted words, label the clue used, and earn a point for a fitting original sentence.
Students collect three words from news headlines, check pronunciation and etymology, then explain how each word shapes the headline's tone.
