Students write readable print and cursive using clear letter shapes, steady size, proper spacing, and consistent placement on the line. They also write a recognizable signature using their first and last names.

Students produce readable print and cursive with consistent letter shapes, size, spacing, and line placement. They write a recognizable first-and-last-name signature without a model.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mix print and cursive letters, crowd words, or change letter size within a line. They may treat a signature as a scribble rather than writing both names clearly and consistently.

How to Assess It

Give students an index card and ask them to copy “The small fox crossed the quiet field” in print, then cursive, and sign below it.

   Have students use lined paper and colored pencils to trace, copy, and independently write one sentence in print and cursive.

   Ask students to compare two handwriting samples and write which is easier to read, citing letter shape, spacing, size, or alignment.

   Play Handwriting Relay, where teams neatly copy one word at a time in print or cursive and check each other’s readability.

   Create a classroom delivery form that students complete in print, add one cursive note to, and sign with their full name.
