What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a comfortable, controlled pencil grip while writing. They form capital letters, lowercase letters, and numbers clearly, then leave visible spaces between words in phrases and sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write capital letters, lowercase letters, and numbers clearly without stopping to recall each shape. Their pencil grip allows control, and each word is separated by a consistent space.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grip the pencil too tightly, start letters from the wrong point, or reverse letters and numbers. They may also crowd words together or leave spaces within a word.
How to Assess It
- Give students the prompt, “Write: I have 2 red hats.” Check grip, letter and number formation, readability, and spaces between words.

Ways to Teach It
Give students play dough and letter cards, then have them shape each letter before writing it three times with a pencil.
Ask students to write, “My favorite animal is ___,” then circle each space between words with a colored pencil.
Play letter bingo by calling a letter or number and having students write it correctly in the matching box.
Have students make a name tag and a short classroom sign, focusing on clear letters and spaces that others can read.
