What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write readable words and sentences in both print and cursive. They control letter shape, size, spacing, and alignment, then create a clear signature using both names.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student produces readable print and cursive with consistent letter shapes, spacing, size, and alignment. The student writes a recognizable, repeatable signature with both names.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat cursive as decorative writing or connect letters in ways that make words hard to read. They may ignore spacing, letter size, or the baseline. Some think a signature can be an unreadable scribble or omit the last name.

How to Assess It

Give students a half-sheet that says, “Write one sentence in print, copy it in cursive, then sign your first and last name.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students copy a short poem on lined paper, circle their clearest letters, and rewrite any letters that are difficult to read.

  2. Ask students to compare two handwriting samples and write which is easier to read, citing spacing, size, shape, or alignment.

  3. Run a readability relay where partners copy sentence cards, exchange papers, and earn a point when the partner reads each sentence correctly.

  4. Give students a simple library card form to complete in print, then have them sign their first and last name.
