What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students keep their printed writing readable. They form every capital and lowercase cursive letter correctly. They connect cursive letters smoothly in words and write a readable first and last name signature.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Printing is neat, evenly spaced, and easy to read. Capital and lowercase cursive letters begin in the right place and have recognizable shapes. Letters connect smoothly within words, and the full signature is readable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add loops or tails that make cursive letters look like different letters. They may lift the pencil between every letter or connect letters that should remain separate. Some rush their signature until it becomes unreadable.
How to Assess It
- On lined paper, have students print one sentence, write A to Z and a to z in cursive, then sign their full name. Check formation, spacing, connections, and readability.

Ways to Teach It
Have students trace sandpaper cursive letters with two fingers, then copy each letter on lined paper while naming its starting point.
Display two handwriting samples and ask students to identify which is easier to read, then explain how shape, size, and spacing help.
Play Cursive Match by pairing capital and lowercase letter cards, then writing each matched pair correctly on lined paper.
Students print a short thank-you note, write the recipient's name in connected cursive, and sign their own first and last name.
