What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students print letters, words, and sentences clearly enough for others to read. They practice cursive capital and lowercase letters and begin signing their first and last names.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Printed letters are readable, correctly sized, spaced, and placed on the line. Students form recognizable cursive letters from a model and write a readable first and last name.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think cursive is just fast or slanted printing. They may reverse letters, mix capital and lowercase forms, or treat a signature as a scribble.
How to Assess It
- On lined paper, ask students to print “My dog can run,” write A, C, M, and S in cursive capitals and lowercase, then sign their full name.

Ways to Teach It
Build cursive letters with yarn, trace each shape with a finger, then copy it onto lined paper.
Compare printed and cursive versions of your name, circle matching letters, and write one sentence describing the differences.
Place letter cards face down; students draw one, write its print and cursive forms, then check a model card.
Examine sample thank-you notes, then print a two-sentence note and sign it in cursive with first and last names.
