What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students hold a pencil in a comfortable, controlled way and print capital and lowercase letters without help. They write from left to right and top to bottom. They capitalize their first and last names and leave spaces between words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student prints recognizable capital and lowercase letters from memory with a comfortable, controlled grasp. Writing moves left to right and down the page. The student capitalizes both names and leaves clear spaces between words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grip the pencil so tightly that letter formation is slow or tiring. They may reverse letters, mix capitals and lowercase letters, start on the right, or write upward. Names may begin with lowercase letters, and words may run together.
How to Assess It
- Give each student lined paper. Ask them to write their first and last names, print paired capital and lowercase letters, then write “I like cats.”

Ways to Teach It
Build letters with craft sticks and clay, then trace and print each capital and lowercase letter on lined paper using a comfortable grasp.
Write “I see a dog” without spaces, then with spaces, and ask students which version is easier to read and why.
Play letter match: students draw a capital card, find its lowercase partner, and print both correctly on a recording sheet.
Have students make desk name cards with correctly capitalized first and last names, then add one spaced sentence about themselves.
