What Students Need to Do: Students form every capital and lowercase letter from memory. They use clear strokes, correct orientation, and appropriate placement on writing lines.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students write recognizable capital and lowercase letters with correct orientation and placement on the line. They do this from memory without tracing or teacher prompts.
Common Misconceptions: Students may reverse letters such as b and d or start strokes in the wrong place. They may mix capital and lowercase forms or rely on a model.
How to Assess It: Say five letter names. Have students write each capital and lowercase pair from memory on lined paper.

Lesson moves

Have students finger-trace letters in sand, then write the same letters from memory on lined paper.
Display letter pairs such as A and a, then ask students to describe what is alike and different.
Play letter-pair bingo by calling a letter name and having students write both forms in one square.
Have students create classroom labels, choosing capitals for first letters and lowercase letters for the rest.
