What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write all capital and lowercase letters in cursive. They use the correct starting point, stroke order, direction, size, and line placement for each letter.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students form every capital and lowercase cursive letter with the correct strokes and starting points. Their letters are recognizable, sized correctly, and placed neatly on the lines.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix print and cursive forms or use the wrong starting point and stroke direction. They may reverse letters or place capitals and lowercase letters at the same height.
How to Assess It
- Give students lined paper and ask them to write five named capital letters and five named lowercase letters in cursive. Check formation, direction, size, and line placement.

Ways to Teach It
Have students trace sandpaper letters with one finger, then write the same letters on lined paper using the matching stroke pattern.
Ask students to explain where a chosen cursive letter starts, which way the pencil moves, and where the letter touches the lines.
Play letter callout bingo, where students fill each square by writing the announced capital or lowercase letter in cursive.
Students create cursive name cards for classroom jobs, checking each capital and lowercase letter against an alphabet model.
