What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students form readable cursive letters and connect them smoothly within names and familiar words. They control letter size, spacing, and pencil movement so words are easy to read.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a full name and familiar words in readable cursive without stopping after every letter. Letter size, spacing, slant, and connections stay mostly consistent.

Common Misconceptions

Students may lift the pencil between each letter or mix print letters into cursive words. They may crowd letters together, use uneven sizes, or add a connection where a capital should remain separate.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write your first and last name in cursive, then copy, “The little fox jumps.” Check for recognizable letters, smooth joins, and readable spacing.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students laminated name cards to trace with dry-erase markers, then have them write each name beside the model without tracing.

  2. Show two cursive versions of the same word and ask students to explain which is easier to read and why.

  3. Play Connection Match by pairing letter cards, then writing each matched pair smoothly three times on lined paper.

  4. Have students write a cursive signature and short message inside a thank-you card for a school staff member.
