What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write connected letters clearly and consistently. They control letter shape, size, spacing, slant, and placement on the line while writing sentences and paragraphs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce cursive that another person can read without guessing. Letter shapes, spacing, size, and connections stay consistent across a full paragraph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may join every letter, including capitals that should remain separate. They may write too quickly, crowd words, or use uneven letter sizes and unclear shapes.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to copy two sentences in cursive on lined paper. Check letter shape, spacing, size, connections, and overall readability.

Ways to Teach It
Give students lined paper and colored pencils to trace, copy, and then independently write a sentence with consistent size and spacing.
Ask students to compare two cursive samples and write which is easier to read, citing two specific handwriting features.
Play Cursive Repair Shop by giving pairs poorly written words to rewrite with clearer shapes, spacing, and connections.
Have students write a cursive thank-you note to a staff member, then exchange notes with partners for a readability check.
