What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write by hand so another person can read every word without guessing. They form recognizable letters and control size, spacing, and placement on the line.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student produces readable work at a steady pace across a full paragraph. Letters have recognizable shapes, words have clear spaces, and writing stays placed on the lines.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think neat writing only means writing slowly or making letters small. They may crowd words, mix letter sizes, or let letters float above and below the line. Some focus on spelling and forget that readers need clear letter shapes and spacing.

How to Assess It

On lined paper, have students write three sentences about their favorite place. Check whether every word is readable on the first try, with clear shapes, spacing, size, and line placement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students lined paper, pencils, and highlighters; they copy a short paragraph, then mark clear spacing and letters that need repair.

  2. Ask students to compare two anonymous handwriting samples and explain which is easier to read, citing letter shape, spacing, size, or alignment.

  3. Run a partner readability relay: students copy a sentence, swap papers, and earn a point when partners read it correctly.

  4. Students handwrite a three item classroom supply request, then check whether a partner can read every item without help.
