What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students form printed letters clearly and consistently. They control letter size, spacing, and placement on the line so others can read their work easily.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student writes complete sentences that another person can read without guessing. Letters are consistently formed, sized, spaced, and placed on the line.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think neatness matters only on final drafts. They may use inconsistent letter size, crowd words, leave unclear spaces, or form letters that look alike.
How to Assess It
- Give students three sentences to copy on lined paper in four minutes. Check letter formation, spacing, line placement, and overall readability.

Ways to Teach It
Have students use lined paper and colored pencils to trace, copy, and compare letters that are often confused, such as a, o, u, and v.
Ask students to rewrite a hard-to-read note, then explain which changes made the message clearer.
