What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students hold a pencil in a stable, comfortable way that gives them control. They use that grasp to form letters clearly without excessive pressure or strain.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student holds a pencil with a stable, comfortable grasp and uses the fingers to guide it. Letters are clear, and the student writes without frequent grip changes or hand strain.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may hold the pencil in a fist, wrap the thumb over the fingers, or grip too close to the tip. They may press too hard or believe only one exact finger position works.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to write their name and three teacher-chosen letters. Check for a controlled grasp, relaxed pressure, and clear letter formation.

Ways to Teach It
Give students short crayons to trace large letters, then copy the letters on lined paper using a relaxed grasp.
Ask students to describe how their fingers and hand feel when the pencil is easy to control.
Play Roll and Write, where students roll a letter cube and write the letter five times with a steady grasp.
Have students make classroom supply labels, focusing on a comfortable grip and clear letter formation.
