What Students Need to Do: Students leave one clear blank space after each word when writing phrases and sentences. They do this without reminders or stopping to count.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student writes or copies a complete sentence with clear, consistent spaces between words. Another reader can quickly tell where each word begins and ends.
Common Misconceptions: Some students run several words together or place spaces between letters within a word. Others leave gaps that are too small, too large, or inconsistent.
How to Assess It: Dictate, “My red kite can fly.” Ask students to write it once, then check for one visible space between each pair of words.

Lesson moves

Give each student a craft-stick space tool to place after every word while writing a sentence on lined paper.
