What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students leave one clear blank space after each word when writing phrases and sentences. They do this without reminders or stopping to count.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes or copies a complete sentence with clear, consistent spaces between words. Another reader can quickly tell where each word begins and ends.

Common Misconceptions

Some students run several words together or place spaces between letters within a word. Others leave gaps that are too small, too large, or inconsistent.

How to Assess It

Dictate, “My red kite can fly.” Ask students to write it once, then check for one visible space between each pair of words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give each student a craft-stick space tool to place after every word while writing a sentence on lined paper.

  2. Students explain how spaces help readers, then repair the sentence Thedogisbig on a whiteboard.

  3. Play Space Detective: partners circle missing or extra spaces in prepared sentences, then rewrite each sentence correctly.

  4. Examine a classroom sign or lunch menu, then copy one line and mark each space with a dot.
