What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write commonly used grade-level words quickly from memory. They spell these words correctly in dictation, sentences, and everyday classroom writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes taught words correctly and promptly after hearing them. The student also spells these words correctly during independent sentence writing without checking a model.

Common Misconceptions

Students may spell irregular words only by sound, such as writing “sed” for “said.” They may copy a word correctly but misspell it when the model is removed. Some confuse similar words such as “of” and “for” or “was” and “saw.”

How to Assess It

Dictate five current high-frequency words and one sentence that uses two of them. Have students write without a word wall, alphabet chart, or model.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs letter tiles to build five target words, then have them cover each word, write it from memory, and check it.

  2. Ask students to write two sentences using four target words, then circle each word and explain which part must be remembered.

  3. Play Word Card Quick Write: reveal a target word for three seconds, hide it, and award a point for accurate spelling.

  4. Have students write a short lunch note to a caregiver using at least five target words from the current list.
