What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize and read common decodable and irregular words quickly and correctly. They use stored word knowledge instead of pausing to sound out each familiar word.

- Students read familiar words quickly and correctly without stopping to sound out each one. They recognize irregular spellings and maintain a smooth pace when the words appear in sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may sound out every common word, which slows reading and disrupts meaning. They may also force irregular words to follow regular spelling patterns, such as reading said to rhyme with paid.
How to Assess It
- Give students a mixed list of 20 familiar decodable and irregular words. Have them read for one minute, then record accuracy and hesitations.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards to sort into regularly spelled and irregular groups, then read each card aloud without hesitation.
Display five common words and ask students to explain which parts follow expected sound patterns and which parts must be remembered.
Play Word Flash: reveal a word card for two seconds, and award a point when a student reads it correctly.
Use a school lunch menu and have students highlight common words, then practice reading each menu line smoothly.
