What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize frequently seen words quickly and say them correctly without stopping to sound out every part. They use known patterns for decodable words and remember unexpected spellings in irregular words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read taught words correctly on the first try, with few pauses and no help from pictures. They recognize regular spelling patterns and remember the unexpected parts of irregular words.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students guess a word from its first letter or the sentence instead of checking every letter. Others apply regular phonics rules to irregular words, or read accurately but too slowly to maintain meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give each student 15 word cards from the week’s passage, mixing decodable and irregular words. Allow 45 seconds, then mark errors and pauses longer than three seconds.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort word cards into regular and irregular groups, then underline decodable chunks and circle unexpected spellings.
Display five target words and ask students to explain which letters follow a known pattern and which spellings they must remember.
Play partner word bingo with taught high-frequency words, requiring students to read each selected word aloud before covering it.
Give students a school lunch menu to highlight familiar high-frequency words, then have them read the marked phrases to a partner.
