What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read common grade-level words quickly and correctly without sounding out each one. They use known sound patterns for regular words and remember unexpected spellings in irregular words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student recognizes taught high-frequency words immediately in lists and connected text. The student reads them correctly and at a steady pace without guessing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter or picture instead of checking the whole word. They may sound out every irregular word or recognize words in lists but miss them in sentences.
How to Assess It
- Give each student 10 taught high-frequency words, split between a list and two sentences. Mark words read correctly within three seconds.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort word cards into “sound it out” and “heart part,” then build each word with letter tiles.
Ask students to circle the surprising spelling in five irregular words and write what sound they expected.
Play Word Wall Splat: call a word, and partners tap the matching card, read it, then use it in a sentence.
Give students a lunch menu or classroom notice, then have them highlight and read every taught high-frequency word.
