Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students read common grade-level words quickly and correctly. They sound out regularly spelled words and remember the unexpected letter patterns in irregular words.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students read taught high-frequency words correctly in word lists, sentences, and short books. They recognize the words quickly and notice the unusual spelling parts in irregular words.
Common Misconceptions: Students may try to sound out every word, even when a spelling does not follow a familiar pattern. They may also guess from the first letter or confuse similar words such as “was” and “saw.”
How to Assess It: Show 12 mixed word cards from the current class list. Ask each student to read them aloud accurately, with no more than a brief pause.

Lesson moves

Build six high-frequency words with magnetic letters, cover one word, rebuild it from memory, then read it aloud.
Write two sentences using four target words, circle each target word, and read the sentences to a partner.
Play word-card snap, with students reading each card correctly before claiming a matching pair.
Highlight target words on a lunch menu, classroom notice, or simple recipe, then read each full sentence aloud.
